Inhalt:

Since 1945 the vast majority of conflicts have been within countries rather than between them. This course surveys competing theories about the causes, conduct, and conclusion of the dominant brand of conflict in the world today.

Topics examined include
- What are the driving forces behind civil wars?
- How do civil wars affect gender relations?
- What is the place of religion in civil wars?
- What is the role of the media for inciting or settling such conflicts?
- What role does international intervention play?
- How do civil wars end?
- What are the options of demilitarizing societies accustomed to war?
- How can societies go ahead after the war has come to an end? Are there any ways for reconciliation?

Empfehlungen zu speziellen Kenntnissen und Bereitschaften:

You should be able to understand and speak English. Please note that we do not expect you to be perfect concerning this matter!

Arbeitsformen:

lectures; student presentations; class discussion

Prüfungsleistungen bzw. Testat:

active participation; student presentation

Basisliteratur:

Unfortunately, there is not the one really good introduction to the issue of civil wars. Therefore, the course will turn to a selected number of book chapters and journal articles that cover a wide range of aspects related to the general theme of the seminar.
