Dieses Seminar ist auf 40 TeilnehmerInnen beschränkt. (Feldforschungen)Inhalt:
In this course we will examine the way urban cultures work in European cities and consider the way they shape images, sounds, texts and codes. We will also consider the industries available in the ‘post-industrial’ urban context: what is still produced in European cities nowadays? How do culture and technology, creativity and innovation interact at the urban level?Through examples from known and less known European centres (Berlin, London, Paris but also Helsinki, Manchester, Dublin, Düsseldorf and Strasbourg) we will try to untangle the connection between urban cultures and productions. This will inevitably link the work of rock bands to that of the architects, city officials to film directors, urban planners to makers.
Main issues at stake in the course will be:
- Defining the cultural industries
- Examining the role that the cultural industries play in cities
- Understanding urban cultures, subcultures and scenes
- The urban quest for sustainability
- Makers and the city
- Temporary cultures: pop-up shops and urban festivals
- Landscapes and soundscapes
- Urban tourism
During the course, the students will write a brief diary entry (1-2 pages), write a field note and record a soundscape for some in-class exercises and group works. The final assignment will be the production of an essay, a documentary or a podcast, studying and evaluating a real on-going project in Düsseldorf (or another city of choice).
The course is interdisciplinary in scope, covering methods, perspectives and theories related to comparative literature, media studies, musicology, cultural studies, cultural geography and urban studies. It is taught in English and relates to different areas of Europe.

Feldforschungen, Gruppenarbeit, VorträgePrüfungsleistungen bzw. Testat:
Gruppenarbeit (mit Vorstellung/Referat oder Poster) + Hausarbeit in deutscher oder englischer Sprache von 15.000 ZeichenInformationen zur Vergabe von freien Plätzen.
