Ernst Slappendel is a lecturer of The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

Inhalt:

Participationism is a development in Western Europe, that has a specific relevance for social work practice. When working on the particpation of vulnerable or excluded groups in society, one of the issues that needs to be adressed is stigmatization. For participation can be hindered or even blocked by individually of publicly held negative stereotypes about groups in society.

During this seminar we’ll focus on stigmatization: what it is, how it works and why social workers need to understand the proces. We’ll pay special attention to stigma’s among social workers themselves. After analyzing the phenomenon, we’ll look at answers, in particular at the strategies that have been developed to fight stigma’s. Strategies that aim at self stigma’s carried by individuals and public stigma’s among societal groups. We’ll find out what destigmatization requires of the motives, roles and skills of social workers.

Our broader context will be the international definition of social work, which stresses the promotion of ‘social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people’ (IFSW 2014).

Upon successful completion of the seminar, you should be able to:
1) Explain the workings of social exclusion in general and stigmatization in particular;
2) Explain why stigmatization needs to be adressed;
3) Describe and validate measures to fight public stigma’s;
4) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the contribution of social workers to these measures;
5) Demonstrate and apply knowledge of theory on (fighting) stigma’s.

Arbeitsformen:

In the seminar we’ll undertake a joint quest for meaning and answers – preferably from an international perspective. The seminar offers room for students to highlight certain aspects of the topics under study, according to their own interests and preferences. Working methods will be (among others): reading sessions, research tasks in small groups, presentations and consultation. Preferably (a) field trip(s) will be a part of the program. The organization of these will be done together with the group before or at the beginning of the course.
Should you have ideas or suggestions for these already, please share these via e-mail. My address is: ernst.slappendel@hs-duesseldorf.de or e.j.slappendel@hhs.nl

Prüfungsleistungen bzw. Testat:

Write a report in which you answer all the following questions:
-Why should public stigma’s about disadvantaged groups be adressed?
-What measures can be taken to tackle public stigma’s about disadvantaged groups? Describe them briefly.
-Choose one of the possible measures. What is it about? (Definition, underlaying theory, supposed and actual outcomes, example of the measure applied in social work practice).
-What is the role of social workers in the chosen measure?
-How do you judge the contribution of the chosen measure to fighting stigma’s about disadvantaged groups?
-How to deal with the stigma’s about disadvantaged groups that social workers (and you?) have themselves?

Your answers consist of self produced photographs, which are accompanied by text. The texts support, underpin and justify the images.
The amount of photographs is free, yet at least three.
The size of the accompanying text is set on 3.000 to 4.000 words.
In the texts you make use of relevant literature (research and theory), the application of which shows oversight and understanding of the literature.
The report follows the APA-guidelines for literature references.
